The Wine

The 2009 Yarden 2T exhibits wild berry and plum characters layered with floral, spice and chocolate notes, all on a background of attractive French oak. An intriguing blend of two traditional Portuguese varieties, the full-bodied wine displays concentrated flavor with a long finish.

Although ready to enjoy now, the 2009 Yarden 2T will improve in the bottle and remain in excellent drinking condition for many years to come. Yarden 2T goes great with any number of beef and lamb dishes, such as a good grilled ribeye steak, or tender “falling off the bone” braised lamb shanks.

The Vintage

At the end of 2008, farmers faced potentially severe water cuts after receiving only half of normal annual rainfall. A very wet February and March brought precipitation back to the seasonal average. A warm June with wet soil profiles caused sudden and pronounced shoot growth. Moderate summer temperatures and higher than normal relative humidity caused a period of slow ripening that abruptly ended with dryer weather at the end of September. Intense harvesting lasted through the end of vintage in late October.

Yarden 2T is made from two classic Portuguese varieties, Touriga Nacional and Tinta Cao, which are famous for their contribution to the outstanding wines of the Douro Valley. The fruit for this wine was grown in the Yonatan Springs Vineyard at an elevation of 700 meters (2,300 feet) and the Geshur Vineyard at 400 meters (1,300 feet). Yarden 2T aged in French oak barrels for eighteen months. The 2009 is the second release of this wine.

The Appellation

The Galilee (or Galil) is the most northern, and generally considered the best, appellation in Israel. The highest quality area within the appellation is the Golan Heights (or simply the Golan), the coldest region in Israel. The vineyards on this volcanic plateau rise from 400 meters (1,300 feet) above sea level to 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) and receive snowfall in the winter. Golan Heights Winery is located in the town of Katzrin in the central Golan.
