THE VINTAGE

A very wet and chilly December, with a record-breaking low of -17°C (1°F) measured in one of our vineyards, set hopes high for cold and rainy weather during the remainder of the winter. The following four months, however, were relatively warm and dry, with only 58% of our average winter precipitation. But happily the months of May to October were all slightly cooler than normal, without any extreme weather events. The grape harvest started a bit late but lasted only 12 weeks, which is shorter than usual. The beautiful growing season combined with slightly low yields resulted in a great 2014 vintage. Comprised mainly of Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier and Muscat Canelli grapes, the 2014 Mount Hermon White was produced from a blend of white varietal fruit grown in vineyards on the cool Golan Heights. Cold fermentation helps maintain the intrinsic vitality of the blend’s classic white varieties.

THE APPELLATION

The Galilee (or Galil) is the most northern, and generally considered the best, appellation in Israel. The highest quality area within the appellation is the Golan Heights (or simply the Golan), the coldest region in Israel. The vineyards on this volcanic plateau rise from 400 meters (1,300 feet) above sea level to 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) and receive snowfall in the winter. Golan Heights Winery is located in the town of Katzrin in the central Golan.
